Why do poets write such compelling essays? How can the methods used to craft a stirring poem help in the creation of an equally moving essay about your life?

Philip Brady has said, “a poet embeds into a lyric moment the seed of immensity.” In this 4-week workshop we will craft a personal essay using poet-essayists such as Ocean Vuong, Khadijah Queen, Sarah Manguso, Maggie Nelson, and Dan Beachy-Quick as inspiration in terms of form and method. We will generate in class and through weekly assignments with plenty of time for sharing work and suggestive critique. This class will help you break out of the narrative ruts afflicting many new essayists and allow your writing to flow from a deeper, truer place where everyone’s inner poet dwells.
